2045 Seattle Was On NPR!
94.9 KUOW, our local NPR station, did an episode of The Conversation today on the future of the monorail and they were kind enough to include us.
It’s fair to say that the majority of those who called in were pretty angry at the mayor. Our part of the program starts at 44:18, right after The Kirkland Chamber of OnTrack.
Listen to the program
A few choice quotes we managed to get on the air
“The mayor said he was a very strong supporter of the system and that he voted for it four times, so we assumed he would be sitting at the table to make sure that not only would he vote for it a fifth time, but that when it came out it would have his stamp of approval all over it.”
“The thing about OnTrack is just because they print ‘Watchdog Group’ on a business card doesn’t make it true.”
“It’s also going to be a great lifeline for West Seattle when the viaduct comes down. So, unless the mayor wants to deploy a few thousand wetsuits to West Seattle residents, I don’t see how else we’re going to get something done in time.”
My thanks to the gentleman at the Saturday meeting for that wetsuit line. I hope you don’t mind me taking it to the radio.
Is The Mayor Listening?
No word yet on whether the mayor is actually going to get down to the Seattle Monorail Project headquarters to work out a ballot measure he approves of, will vote for and will fight for.

As a resident from Snohomish County, I have been actively volunteering for SMP since 2003. However, I too was upset with the financial package that came out in June. How do we ever expect to gain voter support to add future lines when the Green Line was going to cost this much. I am upset with the way this must be dealt to the voters of Seattle to decide its future again. All I can do is help campaign, but not vote. Like many have stated, this is an important investment for our city and region’s future. We must make the nay-sayers look to the future when the gas costs $5-6 dollars a gallon. Look at the networks of systems we will have with Sound Transit AND the Monorail meeting throughout neigborhoods in Seattle? For an example, people in Ballard could take the monorail to a Sound Transit meeting point and take it directly to the airport….we must look at the big picture!!! Remember, our kids will thank us for it!!! Remember Forward Thrust from the 70’s ? well, Atlanta sure does……BE SMART SEATTLITES!!!

Wow, I didn’t know anything about Forward Thrust, especially since I’m new to Seattle and wasn’t born at the time. It seems that Seattle has a long history stupidity over rapid transit. Hopefully history will not repeat itself.

[...] We sent letters to our representatives. We called the Kirkland Chamber of OnTrack the mock organization they were on KUOW. We got news stories on Q13 Fox and Komo 4 News. We managed to get quotes and comments and letters in the Seattle Times and Seattle P-I. The Stranger called us idealists. [...]
