The VOTERS ALREADY DECIDED the fate of the monorail! This is about the city NOT DOING IT'S JOB.
I'd guess that the State of Washington has some laws about what happens when Duly Elected Representatives refuse to do their jobs.

I hope you're right, Brian. Seattle will wither if we don't come up with a rapid transit solution.

ironically, as i stayed and watched this broadcast i missed going out to lunch with my coworkers; we had planned a celebratory last trip in the downtown bus tunnel before it closes tonight to make way for light rail.

what a total bummer. i hope that, at least, the hard work done so far will not be in vain and that what we have learned from this will enable an eventual Seattle Monorail plan to be even better.

"some of the faces on the [SMP] board may have changed, but it is still business as usual at SMP"

they plan to deny permits for use of city right aways to the SMP, and request the state legislature cancel the SMP. permits already extended will likely be cancelled. applause from the attendance for this.

i'm watching. it sounds to me like they're requesting permission from the state to withdraw city support.

"million dollars a week being collected currently by SMP. enough to give free bus rides to everyone in seattle"

"we must have transit systems that are financially responsible" ... "the SMP failed these tests"

The die is pretty much cast with the council at this point, but we've worked hard. We've delivered plenty of email, called each their offices, spoken out at the monorail board meeings (which are at a much easier time of 5:30pm) and got our message in the press. Fingers crossed that they make the right decision.
