City Council Meeting Right Now To Decide Fate of Monorail! Attend If You Can!
We’ve sent them a ton of email, but the City Council is meeting right now to vote on two resolutions. If you are downtown, get down there right now (starts at 11 am) to speak your mind. It really stinks that these things go on while we’re all at work, but if you can swing it, please do.
Seattle City Hall
600 4th Ave. 2nd Floor
Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck and Nick Licata have put up a resolution that would give the monorail more time to find a solution. Councilmember McIver put up a resolution that would end city cooperation. (So much for respecting our votes.)

The die is pretty much cast with the council at this point, but we’ve worked hard. We’ve delivered plenty of email, called each their offices, spoken out at the monorail board meeings (which are at a much easier time of 5:30pm) and got our message in the press. Fingers crossed that they make the right decision.

i’m watching. it sounds to me like they’re requesting permission from the state to withdraw city support.
“million dollars a week being collected currently by SMP. enough to give free bus rides to everyone in seattle”
“we must have transit systems that are financially responsible” … “the SMP failed these tests”

“the SMP continues to stand by overly optimistic [...] projections”
September 23rd, 2005 at 12:02 pm
“some of the faces on the [SMP] board may have changed, but it is still business as usual at SMP”
they plan to deny permits for use of city right aways to the SMP, and request the state legislature cancel the SMP. permits already extended will likely be cancelled. applause from the attendance for this.

Jean Godden, speaking of a dream that failed, cutting our losses. She was choked up, on the verge of tears.

resolution to withdraw support for the SMP passed unanimously.

ironically, as i stayed and watched this broadcast i missed going out to lunch with my coworkers; we had planned a celebratory last trip in the downtown bus tunnel before it closes tonight to make way for light rail.
what a total bummer. i hope that, at least, the hard work done so far will not be in vain and that what we have learned from this will enable an eventual Seattle Monorail plan to be even better.

I hope you’re right, Brian. Seattle will wither if we don’t come up with a rapid transit solution.

[...] Brian kindly comment blogged it over here as it was happening [...]

The VOTERS ALREADY DECIDED the fate of the monorail! This is about the city NOT DOING IT’S JOB.
I’d guess that the State of Washington has some laws about what happens when Duly Elected Representatives refuse to do their jobs.
